Can Solar Panels Power an Electric Vehicle?

Your solar system can offset the electricity used by an EV, but the practical setup depends on charging schedules, solar production, and your home's electrical capacity.

Electric vehicle charging at a residential property

An electric vehicle can add a substantial amount of electricity consumption to a home, which naturally raises the question of whether solar can cover it.

Solar and EVs are a good combination

An EV simply adds another electrical load to the home. Electricity produced by your solar system can be used directly for vehicle charging when the car is plugged in and the charger is running.

Timing matters

Most home solar systems produce the most electricity during daylight hours. Many EV owners, however, plug in after work in the evening.

That means the most valuable charging schedule may not line up with the hours of peak solar production unless the vehicle is home during the day.

Smart charging can help

A charger or energy-management system can sometimes schedule charging during periods when solar production is high or electricity rates are lower.

Battery storage is another option

A home battery can store daytime solar energy for later EV charging, although adding a battery solely to charge an EV may not always be the most economical approach.

Check electrical capacity

An EV charger can add a substantial electrical load. Your home's electrical panel and wiring should be evaluated before installation, particularly in older homes.

Account for the extra energy

When sizing a solar system for an EV, estimate your actual driving distance and charging efficiency rather than simply adding an arbitrary number of panels.

The cleanest setup is one where your solar system, EV charger, home usage, and utility rates are considered together instead of treating the vehicle as a completely separate project.

Does Solar Work in Winter?

Shorter days and weaker sunlight reduce winter production, but solar panels can still generate useful electricity in cold weather.
